Lunar New Year from Itoman

Lunar New Year message card with fishing boats and colorful flags

This year’s January 28th was Lunar or Chinese New Year. Here in Okinawa, it’s called Uchina (Okinawan) new year. Some parts of Okinawa still celebrate New Year on this day, and the city of Itoman is one of them. The fishing town is famous for keeping the lunar calendar traditions.

At Itoman Fishing Port, many fishing boats are decorated with colorful flags called Tairyo-bata, which signifies a large catch of fish, for three days to celebrate New Year.

Maybe because it was very warm on this day, many people visited the port to see the scenery and take pictures.
